Do you hear it? Do you see it? Can you smell it? Spring is finally in the air at Harvey Ranch! The grass is growing, the birds are chirping, and we have exciting things to share!

A Birthday Celebration

First things first, we would like to wish our gorgeous Scottish Highlander a big happy birthday! Miss Fat Cow Calamity Jane turned three years old May 3rd. She shares a birthday with our wonderful son, Austin Harvey. Oh my what a celebration we had for her coming of age! Alfalfa flakes larger than her head, apple treats galore, and the best possible butt scratches! We were always told a fat cow is a happy cow and miss Calamity is definitely a happy cow. It is such a joy to see the love in our family extended to the livestock and beyond. Happy Birthday Austin Harvey and miss Calamity Jane

Our New Additions

Is that a Jersey I see?
Speaking of extending love...please give a warm welcome to our new additions in our livestock family! Meet Buttercup and Lady Ella Jane. These beautiful Jersey cows are a mother-daughter duo from Grass Valley. Buttercup is six years old and an incredibly experienced mother. She has a sweet and gentle nature and loves a good scratch under the chin. Her daughter, Lady Ella Jane, is two years old and quite the character. She sounds the dinner bell at 5 o’clock on the dot every night and we’ve found grain is the way to her heart. We are truly blessed to have Heather in our lives, her exceeding enthusiasm made bringing these diary cows home possible!
Heather and Callie plan on breeding their Jerseys using artificial insemination(AI) so they can start milking as soon as possible. One of their goals is to fully embrace the self-sustaining lifestyle. Raise your hand if you think they should share their dairy products and start a milk share!

Our Grazing Sheep

The Importance of Grazing and Livestock Guardian Dogs

With the weather warming and grass growing, we’ve finally been able to let our sheep out to graze the property. Opening up their pen was like opening the flood gates; we’re not sure who’s more excited, the sheep or us because our feeding schedule just became a whole lot easier!
With our sheep roaming the property, we would like to talk about the importance of their grazing and the roles of our livestock guardian dogs(LGD). Livestock grazing plays an important role in maintaining habitats, lowering fire danger risks, and supporting healthy growth in the livestock. Grazing removes plant material at a much slower rate than cutting or burning and allows for less disruption of wildlife species in the area. Grazing controls more aggressive plant species, like shrubs, from total area encroachment. This allows for more diverse vegetation in areas, helping to sustain the balance between plant, insect, bird, and other animal species in the animal kingdom. Properly managed grazing helps reduce atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide, reduces greenhouse gas accumulation, and protects the land from soil erosion and runoff. Grazing is also beneficial for the livestock. Grazing reduces the risk of unhealthy obese livestock and provides livestock with a variety of vegetation, creating an incredibly nutritional diet. Proper grazing provides a better cut of meat; unlike grain fed livestock, the meat is less fatty and maintains a better texture. Livestock that graze are slower growing but the end product of meat is worth the wait!
Livestock grazing is possible on our property because of the use of our livestock guardian dogs(LGD). LGD work in fascinating ways, which vary breed to breed, to protect their livestock. When introduced at a young age to the herd, LGD bond to the livestock and their instinctual desire drives them to protect the herd. In our LGD pack we run a variety of breeds because we have found their unique instincts are beneficial. Great Pyrenees run a perimeter around their territory and bark at night to ward off predators. Anatolian Shepherds tend to be more aggressive and will quickly go in for the kill if a threat approaches the herd. Maremmas stick close to the herd and work hard to keep the herd together when they travel. We’ve found this combination works best for us in our area. We truly love our LGD and have the upmost respect for their hard work. It is absolutely mesmerizing watching the LGD work together.

Hello Lambing Season!

Is it Spring yet? With such a warm winter and an early lambing season, it sure does feel like Spring at Harvey Ranch. In February we started lambing and with an intense season nearly behind us, it feels good to take a breath. We have been blessed with ninety-two lambs so far! We’re very hopeful the late season lambs will be just as healthy as the early season ones are.

Meet Our Girls

Martie and Marley 2020
With each season of lambing there always seems to be a bummer lamb or two....Meet Martie and Marley! Martie is a cute little thing with a lot of personality and fight in her. She was born with a bum leg and injured during birth. She can’t see more than four feet in front of her, but none of that slows her down. Martie needs some extra care and won’t be able to return to her mother, but something tells us she’s very content living the life of a bottle baby.
Marley is a sweet little girl full of love and spunk. She was born as a triplet and her mother was unable to care for her. Marley was very timid at first, but she is finding a new love and companionship in the bottle baby life. Marley has become best friends with her new sister, Martie, and cares for her immensely.
Seeing the inseparable pair overcome so many milestones is absolutely heartwarming. These two sweethearts will be given a milk replacement supplement until they’re five months old. The girls will then be given a diet of alfalfa and pasture. We are so excited to watch these girls grow and become a part of the herd!

Family Fun at Harvey Ranch

Join us on April 4, 2020 for family fun! We’ve partnered with Brittney Donney Photography, Magnolia Mums, and Millie’s Ice Cream and Coffee Co to create an exciting Easter family photo session. The event will be held at Harvey Ranch. Sample pizza and chocolate dipped Oreos, experience gorgeous floral arrangements, feel the magic and meet Martie and Marley! We are so excited to be co hosting this event and can’t wait to see everyone there! See the flyer below for more information.

January, February, and March 2018 News Letter

Hello to you! We have been working with some crazy weather here at the ranch. We were in the sixties during January. February was warm until half way through and then we were down in the thirties. We are looking forward to March and all that it offers to bring us, including new Lambs! For now, we have completed shearing and included our wool show and farmers market schedules.

The 2018 Wool Crop

Sheared, skirted, weighed, and slowly being updated to our website www.AnnaGotWool.com Wow what a difference in the quality of fleeces this year.  With such a mild winter the fleeces are exceptional.  We sheared 97 sheep and only 5 fleeces were pulled Not For Sale due to a wool break, or other issues.  Whereas, last year being so wet there so many problems with the fleeces at least a 1/3 of the fleeces did not make the grade.
Picture
If you are in the area you should plan a stop at the Wool Room on the ranch.  A photo just doesn’t do justice to the fleeces.  There are so many beautiful Natural Colored fleeces:  black, chocolate, shades of gray from charcoal to deep blue grays.  Light heather grays to oatmeal and there is a large selection of variegated grays, tri colors black , white and gray all in one fleece a spinners dream.  Dark and light morits.  Not just white but bright white a dyers dream to get true colors.  We have fine wool, medium and luster long wools.  Something for any fiber project you might have in mind.  We can help you find the prefect fleece and you can meet the ewe that produced it.

2018 Wool Shows

2018 Farmers Markets

Some new dates and new locations.  Take a look at where you can find Harvey Farm fleeces.  We look forward to a new season seeing familiar faces and meeting new fiber artists.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!

We are sorry we have been absent...

We want to start out by saying Merry Christmas and Happy New Years as we head into January.

We have been missing from our monthly news letters because we have a great new surprise for everyone!

We have added livestock to the ranch and we are just in love with them! See below to help us welcome them!

This is our short and sweet newsletter to end this year. We hope everyone has a beautiful Christmas and Wonderful New Years. We look forward to seeing everyone in the new year.

The New Livestock are here....and they are big!

Okay, they are not big yet but they will be!

The Highland descends from the native cattle of Scotland and is named for the Highland region.  The breed was shaped primarily by natural selection and as a result it is best known for its survival qualities, hardiness, maternal abilities, reproductive efficiency and longevity.  Their long hair gives the breed its ability to overwinter.   The meat tends to be leaner than most beef because Highlands are largely insulated by their thick shaggy hair rather than by subcutaneous fat.

We are excited to introduce Scottish Highland Cattle with our sheep to better utilize our native rangeland.  Highlands consume a wide variety of pest plants as well as grass and brush.  They are considered a "light grazer" in Europe, used to manage and diversify marginal lands without the negative impact seen with heavier breeds.

The two pictured here are Elsie and Louisa, who we call LouLou. Elsie was born in April and LouLou was born in June.
Picture

A light Dusting of Snow has Come!

The sheep and goats are always more than happy to get some alfalfa even when there is snow on the ground.

The snow came in late December and was light but enough to cover the ground. It was just perfect for us because we were still able to drive around with out having to plow.

Art and Ag trails was a Success!

What a great group of ladies thank you for all that you do.  Judy Heydon- needle felting, Anna Harvey Sheep Wrangler, Janet Baldridge-Master Spinner, Michelle Haselton-Pineneedle Basket Artisan, Sally Wise-Weaver & Spinner, Shannon Harvey-Wool Room Monitor What a fun day over 500 guests visited our ranch that day.  We sold out of our Family Basque Chorizo.  We have decided to make it available at our farmers markets for next year.  Our 9-Step Wool Processing was well received and we had a lot of great questions over the course of the day.  The self guided sheep trail was a hit as usual but the guardian puppies stole the show.   Mark your calendars for next year.

Fall is in full swing on the Ranch!

Picture
Bethany, Belle, Annie and Oakley are enjoying the "Indian Summer".  We are excepting little crias late spring early summer.

The Bees are headed towards warmer weather.

Picture
The bee keepers informed us that they had a record clean out with the hives on the property.  The bees were very health, the colony grew no mites or dieses.  They were very happy bees.  We are looking forward the having them back in the spring.  We got a smack'role  of honey but are waiting so patiently for those beautiful golden jars of Westside Honey.

New Additions to the Ranch...

We have some exciting news!

We have Puppies!

One of our beautiful guard dogs gave birth to a large liter of puppies at the end of August. They are a Maremma sheep dog mixed with Anatolian Shepard and Great Pyrenees. It is safe to say that these are going to be some large dogs when they grow up!

Our guardian decided to keep on guarding and have her puppies under our large barn where they would be safe. We tried to get some great pictures for everyone to enjoy and we plan on having more once they start to come out

Monterey County Fair Results

It was the 38 Annual Wool Auction at the Monterey County Fair.  I believe it is the only live auction in California.  The rain showers in the early hours forced the wool show managers to relocate the auction over towards the livestock area by gate 6.  It was covered and protected from the rain and sun.  68 beautiful fleeces entered this year and there were plenty of buyers and ALL of the fleeces sold. All of the Harvey Farm fleeces  placed in their divisions.  We had the Reserve Champion Breed Fleece.  It was "Georgia" one of our lovely Rambouillet ewes.

New Event Venue!

Picture
We have some exciting news!We are excited to announce that we will now be using part of the property as an event venue!

There is enough room for over 200 guests. A beautiful outdoor kitchen to use. The back drop is a large meadow and a forest surrounding.

We are in the midst of working on a website for it but we do have brochures and information for any one curious. Just give us a call or an email!

Hay Delivery in August

It has been busy here on Harvey Farms. We received our hay delivery to make it through the winter. The sheep were more than excited along with the alpacas to see some yummy food being delivered.

Summer Heat

We are definitely feeling the summer heat.  The sheep and dogs are out grazing well before 6:00am and seeking the shade of the pines by 9:30am.  They don’t really start moving again until after 4:00pm.  The yellow tar flowers show their faces only in the cool of the early morning or at dusk.  They close up tight during the heat of the day, trying to conserver their moisture.  I call them tar flowers because the sheep’s noses really do get a sticky tar from grazing amongst the flowers.  A weed that nothing eats but sure is a pretty sight in the summer.

Keeping the Sheep in Coats

The boys are putting coats on our replacement ewe lambs.  The coats help keep the stickers and burrs out of their wool.  The coats also keep the ends of their wool protected from the suns harsh rays otherwise it fades and becomes brittle.  Making a less desirable fleece for the hand spinners.  In a perfect world four coat changes would be all a sheep needs to accommodate their growing wool.  But out here there are so many things to rip, tear and shred their coats.  It seems we are always changing torn coats for patched coats.  It seems like a full time job.
Picture
This coat has become more of a scarf.

The Alpacas got a Shave!

It was a full groom day for the alpacas! We are now up to 14 alpacas! They all were groomed the other day which entailed shearing them, trimming toe nails, getting wormer and recieving vaccines. The shearers have a special table that they are strapped to and then laid down on the side. The table does all of the turning so it does not stress the alpacas by having to flip them on the ground, they simply relax on a table while they are taken care of.

Diddly, one of the older alpacas, decided to take a nap on the table, we decided he enjoys getting pampered very much. It took about 4 hours to get everyone cleaned up and we had a handful of helpers which was wonderful!

We will be making a 50/50 blend of the alpaca fiber with some of our Rambouillet fiber into a lovely 2 ply DK weight yarn to sell at the farmers market and in the wool room on the ranch.  So be sure to look for it.

BEES! Harvey Farms Newest Addition!

Two years of talking about putting bees out here and now thanks to Patty Spiller and Gary McClaughry we have 25 bee hives on the property.  When I walk down to the barns in the evening to put the chickens up for the night, feed the guardian dogs and close the gates on the sheep I pass by the hives.  It almost feels like the ground is moving with all the buzzing activity.  It's so exciting.  Now we wait to taste the "Westside" honey.  Harmony Ridge will be selling it at our local farmers market next year.
